5 Tips to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections Drink plenty of fluid to flush bacteria from your system regularly. You should drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day. This will help your body purge and eliminate harmful toxins and keep the balance of healthy bacteria in your body. Take supplemental vitamin C from 250-1000 mg per day. You should also regularly incorporate foods rich in vitamin C in your diet, such as fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables. The high levels of vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) will create a hostile environment for the bacteria, thus preventing the UTI. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice regularly to prohibit bacteria from clinging to your urinary and digestive tracts. During an active infection, you can drink from 3-4 glasses per day. Routinely supplement your diet with acidophilus or eat yogurt several times per week to encourage a healthy supply of "good" bacteria in your digestive and urinary systems. Supplement your diet with parsley. Parsley is not just a favorite garnish; it also provides the urinary system with apiol- a volatile oil that acts as a urinary tract antiseptic. How to ward off a bladder/urinary tract infection?

  • sassylass asked on Thu, 01 Nov, 2007
I'm feeling the pain and extraordinary discomfort which signal that I've got a bladder/urinary tract infection starting. I'm trying to drink LOTS of water in an effort to flush my system out before the infection really sets in. I've been able to do that before. My question is, besides lots of water and cranberry juice, what other liquids are good to drink to help flush my system? Also, if cranberry juice is good, would it also be good or better to eat cranberries? Thanks for helpful answers.

Keep on drinking water and cranberry juice and that should help flush it out. You can buy cranberry suplement in a capsule that can help ward off future bladder infections if you are prone to them.

are you taking any medication? like warfrain or anything like that? becareful when eating or drinking cranberry juice as it is a anticoagulant and if your not careful you can bleed to death

Work on not getting them in the first place. The guy above me kinda worded it wrong. You should always urinate after sex. It helps clear any fluid blockage that occurs. When you go to the toilet, Wipe front to back - Always. Use those pre-moistened cloths instead of toilet paper. The most common reason for UTI's is fecal contamination. I don't easily recommend new age cures as I believe in FDA testing and medical science. So just know that I wouldn't recommend something willy nilly. A few of my friends have had a lot of success with a product called UTI-Clear.

It is considered normal for women to get about 3 UTIs a year. I used to suffer from very frequent urinary tract infections. I tired water, cranberry juice, cranberry pills, was very careful hygienically, did all the recommended steps regarding intercourse, and still sufferred from them. Turns out I had a bacterial imbalance in the bladder and urethra, so the "good bacteria" were not prevalent enough to fight off the "bad bacteria." I started taking an acidopholous pill every day. These can be purchased at the pharmacy counter, as it is a refrigerated pill, but you do not need a prescription. If you take it soon enough, you may be able to ward off an impending infection. I have not had a bladder infection once since I started this practice (almost three years). It is better to eat cranberries or take a pill because most of the juice is not really a juice, but a "cocktail" with added sugar. The sugar basically "feeds" the bacteria that are already trying to get a hold. Alcohol has the same effect. If you get lower back pain, the infection has moved to your kidneys and you need to get medical attention. Good luck!!!!

Hi Sassy Here are some ideas to heal the issue. Causes of Bladder Infection The primary cause of bladder infection is bacteria that are unable to be eliminated from the urinary tract. The problem is not due to bacteria getting in to the urinary tract, but to bacteria not being able to get out. Menopause can increase the risk of bladder infection developing because, during menopause, levels of the hormone estrogen decline in the body, making it easier for bacteria to stick to the lining of the urinary tract. Preventing Bladder Infection In order to prevent bladder infection, women should do the following: Avoid urinating after intercourse until necessary. Full urination enables the body to more effectively eliminate bacteria from the urinary tract. Consider your choice of contraceptive. Women should avoid the use of overly large fitted diaphragms, as these prevent effective voiding of the bladder, especially after intercourse. Contraceptive sponges can cause similar problems. Better birth control options are to wear a cervical cap, or to have your partner wear a condom. Quick Action Steps for Bladder Infection 1. Avoid urinating after intercourse until necessary.
